When I was growing up there was a Busken Bakery directly in front of my elementary school. And some days, when I missed the bus or if my mom was just feeling particularly fun (which my mom was way fun a lot – we were the kids that happened to not be at school for the Opening Day parade or the day the circus comes into town on the train and they march the elephants off and we happen to get interviewed for the Enquirer…yeah, we were those kids) my mom would stop at Buskens and let me get a doughnut and bring it class with me. Feel free to be jealous.
So I’ve grown up with quite the fondness for Buskens and in particular these shortbread cookies with big chocolate drops on top. Much to my dismay they stopped making the big ones and only sold the little tea cookie size. Okay fine, I’ll just buy 4 little ones instead of 1 big one – more chocolate anyway.
But NOW they only make them on Tuesdays and Fridays – and I just so happened to be there last Friday (as you all know) and by 8 am that morning someone had already come in and bought all but 4 of them! So I went early yesterday morning and got a whole bunch of them to munch on this week (this is why I should be running and doing Zumba multiple times a week – I have zero self control). If you ever have the chance to get these melt in your mouth cookies, I highly suggest them – just make sure it’s super early in the morning on a Tuesday or Friday.
And speaking of Buskens, a few years ago Frisch’s Big Boy accidentally bought the billboard that is directly above the main Busken Bakery (right down the street from my house) and put up this top billboard. Naturally Buskens put a billboard on their actual building and it escalated from there. But every year now at Thanksgiving they do this and I think it’s so fun!
